Reference Librarian

George Fox University announces a position as Reference Librarian in the Murdock Learning Resource Center of the Newberg, Oregon campus with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2017, or before.  The successful candidate will provide reference and library instruction, collection development oversight in assigned areas, manage database licensing and negotiations, and assume related responsibilities as assigned.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides reference and research consultation services. This incorporates a broad range of activities including identifying and interpreting both print and electronic resources to the library's public; instruction in the use of reference and other information resources; and guidance in developing appropriate critical thinking skills and research strategies.

  • Provides oversight for information literacy instruction sessions for general education classes having a significant library emphasis (e.g., LIBA 100). Collaborates with other librarians and faculty as part of this process. Conducts library and information instruction sessions in areas of liaison responsibility.

  • Assumes collection development responsibilities as assigned. Works with library faculty liaisons to build the collection.

  • Creates and maintains library and discipline-specific information guides and resources. For example, oversees development of content for web-based subject guides in assigned areas, and develops LibGuides where needed for specific classes.

  • Acting as the library's primary contact with database vendors and the Orbis Cascade Alliance, requests and receives price quotes, negotiates prices where possible, receives and assesses licenses, requests database trials from vendors when desirable, and conveys related information and documents to the Dean of Libraries and other librarians as appropriate.

  • Serves on faculty committees when possible and appropriate.

  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth; develops and successfully completes growth plans.

  • Communicates effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service.

  • By actions, words and lifestyle, serves as a Christian role model to students, whether through casual contact or in a formal supervisory role.

  • Miscellaneous tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • ALA accredited M.L.S.
  • Two years of professional library experience, preferably in a college or university setting
  • Strong service orientation and interpersonal skills
  • Relevant experience in providing reference/research consultation services and information literacy instruction
  • A commitment to working with a diverse population is essential; demonstrated experience in this area is preferred
  • All applicants must express a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and express their Christian testimony in a local church. In addition, professors agree to live in agreement with the Community Lifestyle Statement and affirm the theological commitments expressed in the Statement of Faith

 

Salary and Rank

Rank anticipated at Assistant Librarian. Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience.
