Associate Dean, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

George Fox University announces an opening for an Associate Dean in the College of Art, Humanities, and Social Sciences, to begin in January 2018 (or possibly earlier based on availability). The Associate Dean supports the work of the Dean in ensuring quality, viability, and assessment of college programs. This includes assisting with planning and budgeting, as well as faculty hiring and professional development. As appropriate, the Associate Dean also represents the College and University in external community engagement efforts.

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences is one of six colleges in the university and consists of six departments, with 17 undergraduate majors and approximately 45 faculty. The college is also responsible for staffing the majority of general education courses for the undergraduate program in the areas of the arts, humanities, and social sciences. We are eager to find a colleague who will support faculty in living out our college values:

The work of our new colleague will include, but is not limited to:

  • Leading department chairs in reviewing college program offerings (majors, minors, certificate programs, and other related offering), offering feedback on programmatic and curricular changes.
  • Working with department chairs or their designees to ensure adequate and timely assessment of academic programs.
  • Working with chairs to monitor and reallocate budget across college programs as needed.
  • Overseeing hiring committees for regular faculty positions within the college and making recommendations to the Dean and Provost for faculty hires.
  • Assisting the dean in conducting periodic reviews for college faculty.
  • Initiating and overseeing a program of professional development within the college
  • Working with chairs and advancement officers on program-specific fundraising initiatives as needed.
  • Representing the college and university at external events as requested by the Dean.
  • Teaching one course per term (fall, spring) within the program offerings of the college or general education.


Qualified candidates must have an appropriate terminal degree in a discipline represented within the college or otherwise suitable for the position. Candidates must have distinguished scholarly credentials and stature appropriate for the rank of Associate or Full Professor in a department of the school.


All applicants must express a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and express their Christian testimony in a local church. In addition, professors agree to live in agreement with the Community Lifestyle Statement and affirm the theological commitments expressed in the Statement of Faith.

  • Ability to articulate the mission of Christian Higher Education, and understand and support the mission, values, and Quaker heritage of the University
  • A record demonstrating the recruitment and/or development and retention of high quality faculty
  • Ability to lead teams to achieve established goals, to be an effective team member, and to lead strategic planning efforts
  • Participatory management and leadership style that encourages and values input from others
  • Ability to foster close working relationships with department chairs, both individually and collectively
  • Knowledgeable, or the ability to become knowledgeable, of the academic requirements of programs beyond one's own preparation
  • Commitment to high standards in instruction, scholarship and engagement
  • Understanding and support for emerging instructional pedagogies including blended and online instruction
  • Evidence of demonstrated success in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion, and the ability to foster just and trusting relationships across all differences
  • Experience in budgeting and planning efforts
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with on- and off-campus constituencies
  • Experience in program reviews and assessment
