Position Description: Assistant/Associate Professor of Art & Design (Applied Design)

George Fox University announces a tenure-track position in the School of Communication and Design with a specialization in design or illustration/animation to begin August 15, 2023. The committee seeks a working studio practitioner with significant professional experience, a broad knowledge of contemporary and historical art and design, as well as an understanding of the technical, critical, and theoretical issues in their relevant field.

Our philosophy of applied design education: Coursework in graphic design, illustration/animation links the fine arts and communication components of the school. We develop the visual language, methods, materials, and tools that will support problem-solving as creative visual art makers. Concept development, process, iterative refinement, and design thinking are all stressed in intermediate and advanced coursework; it is highly valued alongside timely project completion. The school stresses strong teaching alongside internship engagement for students' eventual professional practice. Given the interwoven nature of our applied design fields, we seek candidates who integrate traditional and digital media in curriculum with emphasis in communication through design.

George Fox University, a Christ-centered community, prepares students spiritually, academically, and professionally to think with clarity, act with integrity, and serve with passion. Our vision is to be the Christian university of choice known for empowering students to achieve exceptional life outcomes. We put students first, with Christ at the center of our work, embracing change in order to improve. As a Christ-centered community, George Fox University values diversity as an essential dimension of God's design for human communities. In seeking to become a more inclusive community, we especially encourage applications from women and candidates from racial and ethnic backgrounds that are underrepresented on our faculty.

Program/Department Mission Statement: The Department of Art and Design at George Fox University prepares students for positions of service and leadership by cultivating excellence within the fields of art and design. We emphasize the importance of Christ-centered spiritual formation, social responsibility, stewardship, and diverse discourse within the lives and professional practice of our students. We promote the broader academic values of inquiry, critical thought, experimentation, and innovation.

Our program prepares students to operate professionally within the field of art and design, engages students in critical analysis and response to contemporary visual culture, provides students with professional opportunities to launch their emergent practices, and promotes a programmatic vision to serve our community through the agency and transformational potential of the visual arts.
