Sample Adjunct Faculty Music/Strings Job Description

Adjunct Faculty - Music/Strings

George Fox University announces an opening for one or two adjunct strings faculty members, to begin August 15, 2020.  The successful applicant(s) will support our music department primarily through contracted hours on a semester-by-semester basis.

George Fox University, a Christ-centered community, prepares students spiritually, academically, and professionally to think with clarity, act with integrity, and serve with passion. Professors teach all truth as God's truth, integrating all fields of learning around the person and work of Jesus Christ, bringing the divine revelations through sense, reason, and intuition to the confirming test of Scripture. As a Christ-centered community, George Fox University is an institution that values diversity as an essential dimension of God's design for human communities. In seeking to become a more inclusive community, we especially encourage applications from individuals who can help us achieve our diversity goals.

The music department has a dual mission to offer music degrees (including performance, composition, and music education) as well as ensembles and academic courses for students of all majors. As such, our string positions are closely tied to the George Fox Symphony Orchestra, which both provides the primary performance outlet for our string students and drives non-major enrollment in applied lessons through our scholarship program. Applied string instructors also prepare students for solo recitals and careers as string teachers. All music faculty, even adjuncts, are expected to contribute to the off-campus and on-campus recruitment of new students to the university and to ensembles.

The Music Department is seeking new strings faculty with a passion for education that would work closely with our existing applied violin, applied cello, and orchestra conducting faculty. The following areas are available for one or more qualified individuals.

Symphony Assistant Conductor/String Coach (2 credit units of loading every semester)

  • Coach from within the orchestra, perform with the orchestra, and assist the student concertmaster, attending approximately 10 full orchestra rehearsals and performances per semester.
  • Conduct up to two rehearsals a semester with the full orchestra
  • Lead string sectionals 4-6 times a semester

Music Techniques (1-unit load, spring semesters only)

  • Teach String Techniques class, 1 hour a week in spring semester only. This course is our music education class dedicated towards grade 5-12 public school string orchestra teaching.
  • Work with a string student as your assistant, giving them String Pedagogy experience.

Applied Violin & Viola (all of these activities are paid at Applied rate of $50/hour)

  • Teach applied viola only OR viola and violin. These are a mix of music majors and students in orchestra taking lessons to improve their orchestral performance. Music majors give 1-2 recitals, depending on their concentration, which will be supervised by the Applied teacher.
  • Along with other string faculty & the Orchestra Director, attend juries, organize 1 masterclass with guest artists per semester, and host Performance Classes 1-2 times a semester.
  • Perform in a faculty solo or collaborative concert, annually (extra pay available).

Qualifications

  • A master's degree in a relevant field is required.
  • Previous experience in university applied teaching is preferred.
  • Previous experience in and a passion for grade 6-12 school orchestra are preferred.
  • A commitment to working collaboratively with colleagues is required.
  • A commitment to working with a diverse population of students is essential; demonstrated experience in this area is preferred.
  • All applicants must express a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and express their Christian testimony in a local church. In addition, professors agree to live in agreement with the Community Lifestyle Statement and affirm the theological commitments expressed in the Statement of Faith.
  • Candidates must have legal authority to permanently work in the U.S.

To apply, applicants will need to fill out the George Fox University Faculty Application, which includes a Faith Statement. In addition, please submit:

  • a current CV or resume, which includes links to:

    • a video of either conducting or coaching (any ensemble or instrument is acceptable, under 10 minutes)
  • a cover letter that speaks directly to the areas in which you are interested in teaching, as well as your general string pedagogy
