Adjunct Professor of Music

The undergraduate Music department at George Fox University seeks an adjunct instructor for the following two courses during the Spring 2019 semester:

MUSI 222 Theory IV

4 hours. A continuation of Theory I-III. Includes chromatic harmonies and remote modulations. Introduction to 20th-century harmonic usage. Creative work is required. Meets 8-8:50 MWF and 8-9:15 TTh.

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • examine a musical score and make intelligent observations regarding the function and interaction of musical elements.
  • demonstrate an understanding of musical materials via both the written word and musical notation.
  • describe how musical styles develop and change, and how musical choices affect sound and style.
  • identify, through visual and aural analysis, some standard forms used in various styles of music.
  • create music in various forms and styles which is generally satisfying to the hearers (in this case, the instructor and the class).
  • transcribe musical sounds into written notation at an appropriate level of skill.
  • translate musical notation into sung sound at an appropriate level of skill.

MUSI 225/425 Composition

1-1.5 hours. Individual lessons in composition. 225 includes Initial inquiry into organization of sound resources, developing techniques for working with musical materials, and composition in small forms. 425 is continuing work in composition including (but not limited to) composition in larger forms, digital media, multimovement forms and exploration of style resources. Also includes preparation for and presentation of senior recital in composition. Lessons are arranged according to the teacher's and students' schedules.

Qualifications:

A master's degree in music composition and/or theory is required. Doctoral degree in music composition and/or theory is preferred. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level is essential.

Instructor will be expected to meet class regularly, manage and give feedback on assignments, be available for communication with students, and work professionally and collegially with students and faculty.
