Assistant Professor of History

George Fox University announces a tenure-track faculty position in History, to begin in August 2021. The ideal applicant will be qualified to teach a broad range of history courses and also lead seminars in the George Fox Honors Program, which features a non-disciplinary great books curriculum. In addition, the successful candidate will have a mature understanding of the integration of faith and learning, be committed to teaching in the University's core curriculum, and be able to think creatively about the future of the Humanities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching a broad range of history courses within the curriculum of the Department of History & Politics, including the history course in the new George Fox core curriculum
  • Co-moderating great books seminars in the George Fox Honors Program
  • Developing and sustaining an ongoing program of relevant scholarship
  • Participating in the work of the department, the College of Humanities, and the university, including advising and serving on university committees as needed

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in History required. Applicants who are A.B.D. in a Ph.D. program will be considered but must have an earned Ph.D. by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching is essential.
  • A record of relevant scholarship is essential.
  • All applicants must express a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and express their Christian testimony in a local church. In addition, professors agree to live in agreement with the Community Lifestyle Statement and affirm the theological commitments expressed in the Statement of Faith.
  • Candidates must have legal authority to permanently work in the U.S. Employees of George Fox University must be a resident of one of the following states: Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, New York, Ohio, or Texas.

Salary and Rank

Appointment at the Assistant Professor level is anticipated, though candidates with significant teaching experience at previous institutions may be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor. Salary and benefits are competitive with comparable institutions.
