Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy

George Fox University announces a non-tenure track faculty position in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, to begin in August 2020.  George Fox University is seeking a Director of Clinical Education (DCE) for its doctoral program in physical therapy (DPT). The Director of Clinical Education assists the program director in finding and maintaining quality clinical education sites for the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program.  An important related duty of the DCE is coordinating the placement of students in quality clinical education sites, finding and maintaining an adequate number and variety of such sites, monitoring the training quality of existing sites, and facilitating the successful placement of students in quality internship sites.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate the placement of all students in their clinical education sites.
  • Develop and/or monitor clinical education and maintain a file on each site.
  • Make on-site visitations to clinical sites for the primary purpose of evaluating both students' work and the training program of each site. 
  • Establish and implement meaningful and regular evaluation of the effectiveness of various aspects of the Doctor of Physical Therapy clinical education program.
  • Maintain ongoing review of APTA and CAPTE guidelines for doctoral clinical education, as well as other professional, governmental (e.g., Oregon Physical Therapy Licensing Board) and educational guidelines that are relevant to clinical education.
  • Support all academic clinical training activities, including courses that especially emphasize the development of clinical knowledge, skills, and attitudes. This involvement includes ensuring clinical components of the program reflect recent APTA evidence-based practice guidelines.
  • Be responsible for clinically related policy and procedure revisions as indicated.
  • Monitor on-going evaluations of students' clinical training at all levels. Guide and advise individual students as to possibilities for training experiences best suited to their professional goals, values, abilities, and background experiences. 
  • Maintain clinical training files on students that serve as evaluative records of students' clinical experience, performance, and growth.
  • Assigns grades for all the clinical education courses.
  • Maintain and revise as needed the Clinical Handbook
  • Participate in the life of the university community, and other duties as assigned by the Director of the DPT program.
  • Teaching courses within the curriculum of the School of Physical Therapy
  • Ability to develop and sustain an ongoing program of relevant scholarship.
  • Participation in the work of the department and the university, including advising and serving on university committees as needed.

Qualifications

  • Earned doctoral degree in physical therapy, education, clinical specialty, or other related fields of study. 
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Oregon.  
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience as a licensed physical therapist.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical teaching and/or clinical coordination experience. 
  • Strong communication, organization, interpersonal, problem-solving, and counseling skills. 
  • Knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting clinical education, students, and the profession of physical therapy. 
  • Design and conduct independent and/or collaborative research in clinical education or related areas.

  • Able to initiate, administer, assess, and document clinical education programs.
  • Able to work independently and coordinate work with colleagues and peers. 
  • Assist with CAPTE candidacy and accreditation documents.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching is essential.
  • A record of relevant scholarship is essential.
  • A commitment to working with a diverse population of students is essential; demonstrated experience in this area is preferred.

  • Candidates must have legal authority to permanently work in the U.S.

 Salary and Rank

Appointment at the Assistant Professor level is anticipated, though candidates with significant teaching experience at previous institutions may be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.  Salary and benefits are competitive with comparable institutions.
