Assistant Professor of Political Science - Tenure

George Fox University announces a tenure-track faculty position for the Herbert Hoover Endowed Chair in the Department of History and Politics at the Newberg campus for the 2023-24 academic year. This is a combined research and teaching position. The Herbert Hoover Chair in Faith & Public Life is open for a distinguished scholar from the fields of politics, law, history, philosophy, economics, or theology/religion - with preference given to politics and law -- who works, writes, and speaks at and about the intersection of religion and public life in America, with special consideration to those whose work has resonance with the Quaker heritage of engagement in the public square embodied by Senator Mark Hatfield (from Oregon, who held this role and wrote about conscience in public life).

Job Responsibilities Include, but Are Not Limited To:

  • Teaching courses related to Faith & Public Life
  • Teaching Politics courses within the Politics Concentration
  • Teaching courses in the University's Great Books Honors Program
  • Engagement with The Civility Project
  • Overseeing a lecture series
  • Advising students
  • Participating in the work of the department and the university, including serving on university committees as needed.
  • Communicating effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students, and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service.
  • By actions, words, and lifestyle, be a Christian role model to students, whether through casual contact or in a formal supervisory role.
  • Demonstrating awareness, respect, and appreciation for diversity of culture, background, race, sex, political views, expressions of faith, etc. and works well with a variety of people.
  • Other duties as assigned.

We're Looking for Candidates Who Have:

  • A terminal degree (J.D. or Ph.D.) in a field related to faith and public life (Politics or Law preferred; History, Theology/Religion, Philosophy, or Economics will be considered).
  • A record of relevant scholarship
  • A commitment to working with a diverse population of students; demonstrated experience in this area is preferred.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching
  • All applicants must express a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and express their Christian testimony in a local church. In addition, professors agree to live in agreement with the Community Lifestyle Statement and affirm the theological commitments expressed in the Statement of Faith.
  • Candidates must have legal authority to permanently work in the U.S.

Salary and Rank

Appointment at the Full or Associate Professor level is anticipated
