Dean of Behavioral Health Sciences

The Dean of Behavioral Health reports to the Executive Dean of the Wellness Enterprise. The Dean's primary responsibilities include oversight of the programs in the Graduate School of Counseling, the College of Social Work, and the College of Psychology. Program Directors/Chairs in these areas report directly to the Dean. The Dean serves as a thought and action leader poised to grow and develop all three areas (Counseling, Social Work, and Psychology).

This position is a senior member of the WELL team (Wellness Enterprise Leadership and Logistics), which includes key leadership across the Wellness Enterprise. The Dean is also a member of the WELL Executive Leadership Team, consisting of those Associate Dean rank and above. The qualified applicant is a collaborative and responsive leader, sensitive to the needs and concerns of students, staff, and faculty. The Dean also maintains frameworks of the disciplines represented in the Enterprise, but also seeks out opportunities and lends support for interprofessional education and training initiatives. The Dean works closely with the Executive Dean in executing the Strategic Plan of the Wellness Enterprise.


Specifically, the Dean is responsible to:


Program Development and Growth

  1. Cast a Christ-centered vision for Counseling, Social Work, and Psychology in alignment with the Wellness Enterprise Strategic Plan and the larger University strategic initiatives
  2. Champion efforts to grow current programs and expand new programs.

Academic Operations

  1. Provide administrative oversight to the programs of the Counseling, Social Work, and Psychology
  2. Maintain responsibility for accreditation compliance and reporting
  3. Responder on academic (student and faculty) concerns and violations prior to Executive Dean response (if required)
  4. Provide direct mentorship and guidance for chairs and program directors in the above areas
  5. Provide oversight to promotion and tenure process for relevant faculty in Behavioral Health programs
  6. Provide mentorship to faculty in conjunction with program chairs/directors
  7. In conjunction with the Executive Dean, provide administrative oversight for program budgets
  8. Facilitate collaboration with University Offices pertaining to student and academic success (e.g. GFD, Admissions/Registrar/IDEA, Student Life, Diversity, Advancement, Grants, Alumni, MarCom, etc.)

Enterprise Functions

  1. Serve on the WELL team
  2. Serve on the Executive Dean's "Executive Council"
  3. Contribute to initiatives that support the Wellness Strategic Plan
  4. Focus on developing Interprofessional Education initiatives, particularly with emphasis on those related to Behavioral Health

External Functions

  1. Partner with external stakeholders to strengthen Behavioral Health initiatives
  2. Work with the Executive Dean to further establish connections with diverse communities and partners representing underserved communities
  3. Support Wellness donor relations

Dean Qualifications


The Dean must be a leader of character, competency, calling, and collaboration

  • Character - traits and values that are consistent with a Christ-centered relational approach to leadership
  • Competency - demonstrated executive leadership skills and requisite educational/professional attainment and experience
  • Calling - committed to Christ and the Church, Christian higher education, and the mission and goals of the University
  • Collaboration - commitment to team processes which emphasize diplomacy and other-oriented focus

The successful applicant comes to the position with significant experience in academic leadership and requisite educational attainment. Requirements include:


  1. Full Professor status
  2. Tenured
  3. Licensed Practitioner (OR) in Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology (or license eligible in OR)
  4. Doctoral degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology. Preference given to clinically focused degrees.
  5. Proven experience in cultivating interprofessional relationships internal and external to GFU
  6. Experience with managing/administrating accreditation reports and site visits
  7. At least 5 years of higher education administrative experience
