Director of Liberal Arts/Assistant Professor

George Fox University announces a tenure-track faculty position as the director of the Liberal Arts, to begin in August 2019.  The position will consist of two roles: director of the Liberal Arts and teaching professor in both General Education and the director's academic field.

The Liberal Arts "Core" is a group of multi-disciplinary liberal arts, theology, and humanities-based courses in the University's General Education program that all students take in common and are central to the University's mission to be a place of liberal arts excellence and Christian formation.

These courses focus on the basic tools, values, and habits of Christian liberal arts education reading critically, thinking broadly, discussing charitably, and writing cogently as well as a Christian understanding of the relationship between faith and learning and career and vocation. The director will provide vision, oversight, and management of these courses including curriculum, faculty development, and student success.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Candidate will teach approximately 18 credits of General Education (e.g. Liberal Arts 100 and 400; Humanities 205 and 290; RELI 300), along with courses in candidate's academic field, and receive 6 credits of administrative release per year.
• Candidate will participate in the broader academic life of the university and normal tenure review process.
• Candidate is expected to develop and sustain an ongoing program of relevant scholarship.
• Candidate will participate in the work of the college and the university, including advising, mentoring, and serving on university committees as needed.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in a humanities-related discipline, preferably philosophy or theology. Applicants who are A.B.D. in a Ph.D. program will be considered, but must have earned the Ph.D. by the time of appointment.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching is essential, esp. discussion-based seminar pedagogy.
• A record of relevant scholarship appropriate to career stage is essential.
• Deep commitment to and understanding of the Christian liberal arts tradition and ability to articulate a vision for its future.
• Experience teaching in General Education and directing First-Year Experience programs is desirable.
• Broad knowledge of the history of ideas is desirable.
• Ability to work across disciplinary lines to create a culture of collegiality and joyful love of learning amongst both faculty and students.
• Ability to work across university lines academics, administration, student life, career services, etc. to create formative common experiences in General Education, esp. in the first and final years.
• A commitment to working with a diverse population of students is essential; demonstrated experience in this area is preferred.
• All applicants must express a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and be involved in a local church. In addition, professors agree to live in agreement with the Community Lifestyle Statement and affirm the theological commitments expressed in the Statement of Faith.
• Candidates must have legal authority to permanently work in the U.S.

Salary and Rank

Appointment at the Assistant Professor level is anticipated, though candidates with significant teaching experience at previous institutions may be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor.  Salary and benefits are competitive with comparable institutions.
