George Fox University's George Fox Digital (GFD) office is seeking a motivated and collaborative individual to serve as a GFD Instructor who will support online courses offered to undergraduate students.

About the Job:

At George Fox University, we place a high value on excellent teaching-both in person and online. Through George Fox Digital (GFD), our online course offerings serve an increasing number of our university's undergraduate students. In our current expansion we seek full-time digital administrators who can partner with subject matter experts to design courses and work in a team of GFD Instructors to deliver online courses.


The position of GFD Instructor is responsible for teaching courses in their discipline and supporting additional online instructors in authentically engaging students and delivering timely instruction and assessment in specific online courses. Many of these courses are situated within our university's "Cornerstone" general education program, as we are committed to offering these core experiences to students both in person and online each academic year. Each Summer term we offer online courses that represent programs across all undergraduate programs. Our GFD Instructors work with subject matter experts in designing courses that provide an excellent educational experience for students by way of enhanced communication and organization of the course. The GFD Instructor contributes to a team of online instructors to engage students, integrate accessibility accommodations, and provide equitable, prompt grading feedback.


Number of courses and students: The GFD Instructor will work in the Digital Design team to determine a teaching load for each semester that includes a combination of (1) full facilitation, as faculty of record, of at least one course within the GFD Instructor's specific discipline; and (2) administrative support for online instructors teaching other GFD courses. The number of courses included in the GFD Instructor's full facilitation load, as well as administrative support for other courses, will be determined on the basis of enrollments.

Job Responsibilities Include, but Are Not Limited To:

  • Work closely with the George Fox Digital leadership and Digital Design team to determine project priorities, confirm teaching schedules, and sustain the specific work rhythm that GFD courses
  • Work closely with subject matter experts in designing courses in the GFD Instructor's
  • Work closely with online instructors assigned to courses in the GFD Instructor's discipline to ensure students have transformative educational experiences.
  • Participate in professional development for online instructors each academic term-fall, spring, and summer. This includes (1)maintaining the GFD course template on Canvas to assure design continuity across all courses (2) work in the GFD Digital Design team to continuously evaluate instructional content, student engagement, assignments, and assessments; (3) communicate with students and respond to inquiries about administrative issues such as course policies and procedures, disability and accessibility, and course design; (4) participate in professional development for online instructors on grading practices (e.g., setting up and monitoring formative quizzes and summative exams; assessing student discussions; registering mid-term and final grades; etc.).
  • Serve as a liaison to our Disability and Accessibility office, managing the system of DAS contracts between online instructors and students, and ensuring that students receive proper accommodations (e.g., extra time on quizzes, closed captioning coordinated through the GFU IT services, etc.).
  • Other duties may include assisting the George Fox Digital team with projects within the scope of its mission, as well as working with the Digital Design team on key GFD initiatives.
  • Communicating effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students, and the public, in a spirit of teamwork, respect and customer service.
  • By actions, words, and lifestyle, be a Christian role model to students, whether through casual contact or in a formal supervisory role.
  • Demonstrating awareness, respect, and appreciation for diversity of culture, background, race, sex, political views, expressions of faith, etc. and works well with a variety of people.
  • Other duties as assigned.

A Day in the Life of This Position:

The GFD Instructor can expect a daily routine revolving around engaging with GFD students through various interactions (e.g., email, phone, video, and in-person meetings), with a focus on facilitating success in the Instructor's course(s) as well as any courses in which the Instructor is providing administrative support. Student support will be largely procedural in nature across all courses, and will involve instruction and assessment in courses for which the Instructor is assigned as faculty of record. Additionally, the GFD Instructor can expect to work collaboratively with subject matter experts in course design.

We're Looking for Candidates Who Have:

  • Areas of expertise we are seeking, at Masters level or above: Writing and Literature; Psychology and Sociology; any STEM field (with a preference for Mathematics and general science fields)
  • Online teaching and course design experience.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to maintain active and timely communication during the workweek with online instructors and students.
  • Experience and knowledge working with a diverse student demographic.
  • Understanding of disability and accessibility issues; commitment to providing all students with equitable access to course materials.
  • Willingness to occasionally work on nights and weekends as course rhythms
  • A personal commitment to Jesus Christ and express their Christian testimony in a church. In addition, employees agree to live in agreement with the Community Lifestyle Statement and affirm the theological commitments expressed in the Statement of Faith.

Preference Will be Given to Those Who Have the Following Attributes:

  • The preferred candidate will have experience in teaching online, or extensive participation as an online This position requires high engagement with students, which relies on skills in personal communication and time management.

Job Information:

  • Hours Per Week: 40 hours (1.0 FTE) - (percentages represent general expectations; actual weekly allocation of hours may vary)
    • Instruction and assessment in assigned courses: 45%
    • Communication with students: 25%
    • Design and maintenance of course sites: 15%
    • Integration and maintenance of DAS accommodations: 5%
    • Attendance of meetings (departmental, team, etc.): 5%

  • Working Conditions: Physical requirements are those of a normal office environment
