Research and Instruction Librarian

George Fox University Libraries announces a non-tenure track faculty Research and Instruction Librarian to begin July 2018.

Libraries Mission

Across our two libraries we are supported by a vibrant and patron-focused public services team, service-oriented librarians, dedicated technical services staff, a dynamic educational technology director, and an engaged archivist capturing and preserving institutional and local history. Current work contributing to the university's "Be Known" promise includes the student textbook affordability program, new 24/7 study space at the Newberg campus library, personalized research consultations offered in a variety of formats, and a growing digital repository of student/faculty scholarship.

Research and Instruction Librarian Vision

The Research and Instruction Librarian currently serves as the liaison to the Master of Social Work program, Portland Seminary, and College of Christian Studies. Others responsibilities to be determined based on experience and university needs. The librarian develops rich professional relationships with faculty and promotes information literacy through teaching. Partnering with 18 library staff including six librarians, the Research and Instruction Librarian helps make the library a place for holistic connection, innovative creation, and authentic contribution.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Develops strong liaison relationships with faculty in assigned subject areas.
  2. Develops and teaches information literacy sessions with faculty in support of the Libraries' strategic plan, specific course goals, and objectives.
  3. Competently uses effective and proven teaching and learning pedagogies to enhance student learning and build relationships.
  4. Provides research help and consultations to the GFU community in-person, phone, email, chat, and video. This includes instruction in the use of resources and guidance in developing critical thinking and research strategies.
  5. Assumes collection development responsibilities as assigned. Partners with faculty to build and regularly evaluate the collection.
  6. Creates and maintains library and discipline-specific research guides. For example, oversees development of content for web-based subject guides in assigned areas, and develops course guides where needed for specific classes.
  7. Promotes digital literacy and participates in digital fluency initiatives.
  8. Participates in faculty governance including committees.
  9. Contributes to the shared work of the Orbis Cascade Alliance.
  10. In support of one's personal development, participation in professional groups and associations expected. The librarian will contribute new knowledge and desire to learn new information to spur innovation.
  11. Communicates effectively and courteously with others, including employees, students, and the public.
  12. Serves as a Christian role model to students by actions, words and lifestyle.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned based on university needs, interests, and expertise.

Required Qualifications

  1. Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
  2. Academic library experience.
  3. A commitment to working with a diverse population of students (including students of color, first-generation college students, international students, etc.) is essential; demonstrated experience in this area is preferred.
  4. Commitment to the mission, vision, and values of George Fox University including seeking ways to put students first, practice Christ in everything, and innovating to improve outcomes.
  5. All applicants must express a personal commitment to Jesus Christ and express their Christian testimony in a local church. In addition, professors agree to live in agreement with the Community Lifestyle Statement and affirm the theological commitments expressed in the Statement of Faith.

Preferred Characteristics

  1. Undergraduate or graduate degree in a theology-related field.
  2. Relevant experience providing research consultation and information literacy instruction.
  3. Commitment to high standards in instruction, scholarship, and engagement.
  4. Understanding of instructional pedagogies (including blended and online instruction) and emerging technologies.
  5. Interest in teaching and learning innovations and best practices related to information literacy.
  6. Evidence of demonstrated success in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion, and the ability to foster just and trusting relationships across all differences.
  7. Ability to articulate the mission of Christian Higher Education.

Salary and Rank

Appointment at the Assistant Librarian level anticipated. Salary and benefits are competitive with comparable institutions.
